Program Description

The Special Education, Educational Foundations, and Policy Track focuses on exposing students to individuals with special needs. Students will learn about the specific cognitive, language, and social/emotional developmental needs for individuals with disabilities. Students will also learn about general and early education practices and curricula. Students will select cognates within the track that will provide strategic planning for advanced degrees in areas that serve individuals with special education, including Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA), policy, advocacy, law, business, health services, mental health and public administration. These areas of interests will assist students who want to gain knowledge in Special Education, Educational Foundations, and Policy for their advanced degrees and do not plan to be teachers. (NOTE: This track does not result in a teacher certification.)

Admission Requirements

1. A student entering FIU as a Freshman or as a Transfer Student with less than 30 credits

You are considered a freshman when you have earned less than 13 college credits since your high school graduation. Credits earned in Dual Enrollment, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate programs do not affect your freshman status.

Admissions criteria are the same as the general FIU criteria for students entering with fewer than 60 approved credits. Click here for the details.

2. Student transferring to FIU with 31-59 earned and approved credits

o A minimum lower-division GPA of 2.00 or better on a 4.0 scale.

3. Students transferring to FIU with 60 or more earned and approved credits

In addition to the general FIU Transfer Admissions criteria for students with 60 credits or more, the following criteria must be met:

o A minimum lower-division GPA of 2.0 or better on a 4.0 scale;

o Either 60 credit hours of lower division coursework or an AA degree from an accredited institution;

o Must meet the following lower division requirements:

o University Core/General Education;
