The Steven J. Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineers are the technical professionals who identify and design solutions for environmental problems affecting health issues and the quality of the air, water, and land. The impact of environmental problems on the quality of life has significantly expanded the job opportunities in environmental engineering, placing it among the fastest growing professional fields. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at FIU is the prime resource for environmental engineering education, training, research, and technology development in Florida. Our program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation of knowledge, which is necessary to produce the best and most cost-effective engineering solutions to local and global environmental problems. The curriculum consists of 127 credits hours, including technical courses in the areas of environmental engineering, atmospheric pollution control, solid waste management, water supply, and water resources engineering.

Environmental Studies

The Bachelor of Sciences in Environmental Studies degree emphasizes chemical and ecological aspects of environmental analysis. This degree provides students with a strong background in the natural sciences as preparation for technical work in the environmental field, with a particular emphasis on chemistry and biology. The degree has an interdisciplinary focus, and its majors are required to take courses in environmental economics and policy, as well as a course in environmental ethics. Both the BA and BS programs feature internships in the senior year, with students placed in the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), and other environmental agencies and non-governmental organizations.

Environmental Studies - Agricultural Sciences

The Agricultural Sciences major within the B.S. in Environmental Studies degree focuses on the agricultural sciences and would be suitable for students interested in career pertaining to food production, agricultural sciences and related natural resource management (e.g., soils, land, water and agro-ecological resources) in government agencies, agricultural research organizations or private industries. This Major will share common lower and upper division courses with the other Major, Natural Resources Sciences. Students will require lower division prerequisite courses in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Statistics. Students will then take a series of required upper division courses in agriculture-related science courses in areas such as Horticulture, Integrated Pest Management, Entomology, Soil and Water Resources, Environmental Sciences, Sustainable Agriculture, and Agroecology.
