Administration and Management

The Administration and Management exploratory area contains majors that are ideal for students who are interested in pursuing careers in business or managerial positions in different professions ranging from the hospitality industry and health care industry to careers in the public and nonprofit sectors. Exploratory majors are excellent for students who are unsure about the major they want to pursue or for students who do not meet the criteria for certain majors with selective admissions. These students will have access to an academic advisor who will provide personal guidance with exploring various career options and selecting an appropriate major.

Undergraduate Education

Undergraduate Education offers programs and services which guide FIU Undergraduates to timely graduation within their chosen major. Students who have not selected a major upon admissions are provided a range of tools and guidance through the Exploratory Studies program. Using six different tracks, the Exploratory Studies Program is dedicated to guiding students into appropriate majors as early as possible in their university career. For all undergraduates attending FIU, Undergraduate Education provides academic advising, first-year success seminars, tutoring services, study abroad and student exchange programs. Transfer and Transition Services provide valuable assistance to entering transfer students.

Art

The BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art) degree is our "professional level" program for those planning a career as an artist and those likely to seek admission to a Master of Fine Arts graduate program. Especially through the Thesis I & II courses, BFA majors are expected to reach a very high level of achievement in the skill and conceptual clarity of their work. Studio Areas: Ceramics, Drawing, Electronic Art & Digital Media, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, and Time-Based Media.

Asian Studies

The Asian Studies B.A. enhances the mission of Florida International University to achieve excellence in diverse aspects of its international studies programs. This degree is designed for students with a desire for intellectual growth that focuses on Asia. The study of this increasingly important world region, with an emphasis on China, Japan, India, and Central and Southeast Asia, provides a multidisciplinary approach covering the languages and culture, philosophy and religion, arts and literature, as well as issues in history, politics, geography, sociology/anthropology, international relations, education and business in the global environment. Asian Studies provides instruction, advising, and experiential opportunities for students in an environment promoting scholarship, critical thinking, free inquiry, and clear and candid communication.

International and Public Affairs

The Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs (G-SIPA) brings together many of Florida International University’s internationally oriented disciplines to provide cutting-edge research, first-rate teaching, and innovative training necessary for the globalized world of the 21st century. G-SIPA includes eight signature departments: Criminal Justice, Economics, Global & Sociocultural Studies, History, Modern Languages, Politics and International Relations, Public Administration, and Religious Studies. The School also houses many of the University’s most prominent international centers, institutes, and programs.

Biological Science

The Biological Sciences degree program provides a strong foundation in biology, from molecules to ecosystems, including structural and developmental biology, physiology, organismal diversity, and ecology, within an evolutionary framework. Faculty and students work with a diverse array of plant, animal, and microbial organisms and in a wide range of terrestrial, freshwater, and marine habitats. FIU is ideally situated for the study of tropical biology and many of our laboratories specialize in tropical systems. This field of study will prepare students for further graduate and professional studies, as well as for employment in areas that require university-level training in the life sciences. A Biology Education track prepares students for teaching at the secondary level.

This degree-specific program combines the rigorous requirements of the Biology B.S. program with content-specific pedagogy to prepare students interested in teaching biology at the secondary level. The Biology Education major offers a degree in the discipline with multiple field experiences in diverse classroom settings and culminates in a full-time teaching internship. Upon graduation from the program, students are endorsed for Full Teacher Certification by the State of Florida’s Department of Education.

The SJMC Advertising program is designed to provide students with the fundamental elements of strategic communications, in addition to preparing them for a career in two specific advertising tracks: Account Management and Creative Advertising. Our Advertising discipline has evolved with the changes in media, and students receive extensive training in the strategic use of digital communications and social media. SJMC Advertising graduates have won a number of international awards and landed positions at major multinationals and top global agencies, as well as local ad agencies based in South Florida.

FIU's Department of Journalism and Broadcasting is internationally-known for preparing students to be outstanding journalists who can report, write, produce video and multimedia stories that capture life in the rapidly urbanizing community of South Florida. SJMC classes train students to work in the new media landscape by offering hands-on skills, and encouraging students to experiment, innovate and think entrepreneurially. SJMC grads are sought after by all the major media in South Florida-English and Spanish-language and can be found working in newsrooms and broadcast studios as reporters, anchors and digital specialists at local, national and international levels.

Students in English explore the vast array of literatures produced across the world and across the centuries. Through reading, discussing, and writing about significant texts, students enhance their abilities to understand and analyze fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfictional prose; at the same time, they gain insights into individual lives and cultures that enrich their own experiences. Literature majors enjoy the camaraderie generated by shared interests and heated debates. Their education provides ways of looking at the world as well as a body of knowledge on which to draw. Majoring in English prepares students for graduate work in English and for admission to law school; in addition, students can enter a careers where good writing and excellent critical thinking skills are required.
