Program Description
The undergraduate Reading and ESOL Endorsements program utilizes a field-centered preparation model leading to approval for State of Florida Certification in Exceptional Student Education with ESOL and Reading Endorsements. The program is an initial teacher preparation program that will prepare teachers of students with disabilities in K-12 settings with coursework and field experiences that focus on the necessary skills to assess, plan, teach, and evaluate the education of students with high-incidence disabilities, including those who are ESOL. Students are prepared to teach learners with high-incidence disabilities from ages 5-22.
The Florida Education of Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) competencies are met throughout program coursework. The Reading Endorsement competencies are addressed and assessed in four program courses and with corresponding field experiences.
Admission Requirements
1. A student entering FIU as a Freshman or as a Transfer Student with less than 30 credits
You are considered a freshman when you have earned less than 13 college credits since your high school graduation. Credits earned in Dual Enrollment, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate programs do not affect your freshman status.
Admissions criteria are the same as the general FIU criteria for students entering with fewer than 60 approved credits. Click here for the details.
2. Student transferring to FIU with 31-59 earned and approved credits
o A minimum lower-division GPA of 2.00 or better on a 4.0 scale.
3. Students transferring to FIU with 60 or more earned and approved credits
Education majors resulting in teacher certification have specific requirements for admission at the upper division level. In addition to the general FIU Transfer Admissions criteria for students with 60 credits or more, the following criteria must be met:
o A minimum lower-division GPA of 2.30 or better on a 4.0 scale;
o Either 60 credit hours of lower division coursework or an AA degree from an accredited institution;
o A passing score on all four sections of the Florida Teacher Certification General Knowledge Exam
o Must meet the following lower division requirements:
o University Core/General Education;
o Major specific lower division common pre-requisites
o EDF 1005: Introduction to Education (3 credits)
o EDG 2085: Teaching Diverse Populations (3 credits)
o EME 2040: Introduction to Educational Technology (3 credits)
o In addition to EDG 2085, students must take 6 additional semester hours with an international or diversity focus (see academic advisor).
If you are a Transfer Student with 60 or more credits who meets general FIU Admissions criteria, but does not meet the above criteria for admission to a teacher certification program, you will be admitted to FIU but not admitted to the education certification program. All students must pass the General Knowledge Exam (GK) by the time they reach 72 credits in their program of study.
