Program Description
The Accelerated Option Bachelor of Science in Nursing (AO BSN) program is uniquely designed for those who hold a bachelor’s degree in another field. It is also available to foreign educated physicians who hold a Doctor of Medicine from an accredited foreign medical school and are seeking a career change. The AO BSN is comprised of three (3) semesters of full-time coursework, beginning with an intensive mini-semester of nursing fundamentals immediately prior to the start of the track. Students are admitted into the AO BSN track once a year in the fall semester and begin during the fall B session.
Admission Requirements
Minimum 3.00 GPA from a BA/BS degree in another discipline from a regionally accredited institution; FEP’s: Doctor of Medicine from an accredited foreign medical school with a minimum 2.00 GPA. Applicants must provide original transcripts from their medical school to Undergraduate Admissions to determine degree equivalency. A NACES evaluation can also be provided if already obtained (but is not required). Translations, preferably from a NACES organization, must be submitted if the transcripts are not in English. You can find all participating members at https://www.naces.org. If an FEP has already obtained an RN license through another nursing program, the individual does not qualify for the AO BSN track.
Applicants must successfully meet all FIU Undergraduate Admissions requirements. Submission of the FIU undergraduate application can be done at https://admissions.fiu.edu. FEP’s must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent residency in order to qualify. Temporary Protective Status (TPS), visas, and political asylum do not qualify.
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher is required for all nursing prerequisite courses. FEP’s: Minimum grade of “C” for required prerequisites.
Successful completion of the ATI TEAS exam with a minimum overall score of 70% and a minimum science score of 62%. The minimum does not guarantee admission due to the competitiveness of the program. To register for the exam, please visit https://testing.fiu.edu.
FEP’s: Completion of the TOEFL exam with a 550 on the Paper Based or 80 on the iBT or a minimum band score of 6.5 on the IELTS is required. Completion of ENC 1101 and 1102 is also considered to satisfy this requirement. The TOEFL can be taken at our English Language Institute at FIU. To register, please visit https://eli.fiu.edu.
A three-minute video essay answering three assigned questions serves as the interview component (uploaded to YouTube). Further instructions available on the NursingCAS application.
An internal program application on the NursingCAS platform is required for review and must be submitted by no later than July 1st. The application cycle opens on April 1st. Application is available at https://nursingcas.liaisoncas.com/applicant-ux/#/login.
