Program Description
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a limited access program (admitting 100 students each fall) for students who wish to become a registered nurse (RN) and obtain their BSN degree. Nursing is the fastest growing profession in the U.S. This program teaches students using our advanced STAR (Simulation Teaching and Research) Center, interdisciplinary simulation and clinical experiences. Students learn nursing science, nursing skills, cultural sensitivity, and the application of research to provide high-quality, evidence-based, compassionate nursing care to assist multi-generational, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual patients/clients and specific underserved populations to improve their health, restore health, to live with chronic care conditions, and to rehabilitate disabilities in the acute care and community settings.
Admission Requirements
Students entering FIU as Freshmen:
Nursing is a limited access major at FIU. In addition to the general FIU admissions requirements, students must meet the NWCNHS’s Generic BSN admission requirements and submit a NursingCAS application to the Undergraduate Nursing Department by the March 15th deadline toward the end of their sophomore year. The NursingCAS application must be screened and reviewed by the Admissions Committee of the Undergraduate Nursing Department within the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences (NWCNHS). The Admissions Committee determines official admissions decisions.
Students transferring to FIU with 60 or more earned, approved credits or a FL Public College Associate of Arts:
As the Generic BSN is a limited access and highly competitive major, the Admissions Committee reviews all applications to determine acceptance decisions. Transfer students must submit an FIU Undergraduate Application and a NursingCAS application. If FIU Admission criteria for transfer students with 60 credits or more are met, as well as the Generic BSN minimum admission requirements, the application will be reviewed. The Admissions Committee determines official admissions decisions.
Additional admission requirements:
A minimum lower division GPA of 3.25 or higher (The average applicant has a GPA much higher than the minimum). No grades lower than a “C” are allowed in required science courses and/or corresponding labs. Failed science courses including labs will result in being disqualified from consideration even if retaken for a passing grade. Successful completion of ATI TEAS with minimum scores of 70% overall and 62% in science. A 3-minute video essay answering three questions provided on the NursingCAS application.
